🍝 Cognates & false friends.
Spaghetti, just like espresso and cappuccino, is one of many words that the English language borrowed from Italian together with the product they represent.
🍝 Among other identical words in English and Italian there are also piano(forte), ballerina, opera, gala, replica, marina, Riviera, alibi, aroma, propaganda, gusto, formula, and trombone.
🔼 There is only a slight difference in their pronunciation but the meaning is the same.
🔼 Careful though: some words are spelled the same but have a different meaning. For example, ‘camera’ refers to the picture-taking device in English, whereas it is a synonym for ‘room’ in Italian.
So if you happen to be in Italy and would like to take some photos but forgot your ‘camera’ at home, make sure you purchase ‘una macchina fotografica’!
